Filtering and Sorting in Spreadsheets

The 25-year roster

The Google Spreadsheet filters can be used to investigate the concert summary list and the 25-year roster. Let's start with a specific example using the roster.

To initiate sorting and filtering, click on Data in the spreadsheet menu, then select "Filter views ... Create new temporary filter view"

Each column in the spreadsheet now has a filter arrow at the top of each column near the column label. Clicking on the arrow opens the filter menu for that column:

Sort A to Z
Sort Z to A
Select All
Clear
Checkmarks for selecting rows with specific values of the filtered variable.

Here are some examples:

1. Who has played oboe and who were the early oboists?
Click the small arrow in the "Section" header box. Select "Filter: Clear" from the Section filter menu, then select “04 Oboe” and click "OK".

Here are some other examples you might try:

2. In what years was Kevin Sedatole (now Director of Bands at Michigan State University) in the band?
Select “Clear” in the Last Name filter menu. Then scroll down and click “Sedatole” so that a checkmark appears in front of it. The listing shows that Kevin was on the 1987 through 1990 rosters and played trumpet.

3. Who was in the 2001 band?
Select “1” from the 2001 menu.

2. To undo the selections and sorts, select “Select All” from filters where specific values had been selected and select “Sort Ascending” from the Order filter menu.

3. What have we played by Mark Camphouse?
